Volume swells and fades with MIDI Out

Is there a way to perform volume swells and fades using the X axis control when playing another app via ThumbJam with MIDI Out? I mean specifically on single sustained notes.
I haven't managed to make it work. I've read all the documentation and tried various setting combinations. It does work with vertical tilt, and of course also when playing one of TJ's own instruments. I'm using an iPad Pro running iOS 9.2.
