scale tunings for external hardware

Post by atoori »

Hi,

Thumbjam update rocks! I'm able to trigger my
external sound module via irig midi. When I play my keyboard
(a midi controller) I can hear my external module.
However the alternate tunings assigned in thumbjam
don't respond when I play from my keyboard. I'm only able
to have my external module react to alternate tunings created
in thumbjam when actually triggered from the iPhone itself- not
from my keyboard controller. I looked in settings and couldn't
figure it out.

You need to turn on the Scale Lock option in the MIDI Control preferences, then any input on "white key" notes will be translated into notes in the currently selected key and scale.

Yes this works with all the preset scales.
However, It doesn't work when the scale has
alternate tunings ie: -30 cents. Again, when I use my
iPhone to trigger the keys then the the proper
tuning(pitch of the note) is heard. But when using
A midi controller to trigger the external sound module
scale lock works providing there hasn't been any
deviation from 0 cents for any of the pitches.
Middle eastern music works with quartertones.
These quartertones can only be sent directly from
The iPhone to the external sound module and not the midi keyboard controller.

Oh wait, you are trying to use an external keyboard as input to TJ, apply Scale Lock for the MIDI thru capability to go back out to your external sound module? In that case, you are correct, it looks like only midi note events will be output and not any custom pitch bend messages that might be required to get the external sound module to reproduce the altered tuning of the scale. That was an oversight on my part, and I'll try to correct it in a future update.

And yet if I play thumbjam directly on the iPhone, the altered tuned notes are sounded om the external module properly. In other words the external module responds to the user tuning of thumbjam.

I know, the oversight is that the *MIDI Thru* feature does not produce the pitch bend messages whereas the normal TJ touch control does.

I am having a problem using iFrettless bass as a controller with Thumbjam.
The pitch is off even when I use the chromatic scale.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I just replied to you in an email:

You just need to match up the pitch bend range in both apps. In iFretless, in the midi settings swipe to the second page, choose channel Omni, and set midi bend up to 12 (for best results), and choose octave you like. Then in TJ's Prefs->MIDI Control, set Pitchbend Range to 12 also. I tried it and it sounded right to me....
