How can I prevent the program from "starting up" (and then running in the background) every time I get a phone call? It's odd. I have to tap to bring the program up, and then "close" it (tapping the Home button).... but when the next call comes in, I see the red thumbjam bar at the top of the screen - so it has opened up again.

can this be stopped?

Yes, see one of the other posts, you can kill thumbjam from running at all:
Double-tap the home button in the home screen (with all the app icons): a task bar will come up at the bottom, find ThumbJam's icon there (swipe left to go through them), press and hold it until the red remove indicator comes up, then tap the red indicator to kill it.
