On the left hand column ther is an arrow that says HOLD and a crooked line...what do these two man and what do they do? Thanks.

It is a sustain button, similar to the pedal on a piano. While you are holding it notes will sustain even after lifting your finger. The arrow indicates that you can slide the hold button up to lock the currently sustaining notes so you can even take your finger off the hold button and continue playing normally while they still sustain.
