Best method for smooth pan using H. Tilt?

I've got a preset in which I'm using H. Tilt for panning. Sometimes the pan moves smoothly, perfectly; other times the sound gets stuck in one spot and then later catches up to the tilt abruptly.
I've tried this with no other apps running and it still happens. It seems sometimes that if I combine a bit of forward tilt with it, it works more consistently, but I'd really like it to be 100% reliable and consistent.
I acknowledge that there is a lot of room for operator error / variance on this one...
