Pseudo-octaves and sidebar Oct buttons

Postby Gordon Charlton » Wed Apr 12, 2017 5:36 am

Hi,

The sidebar Oct buttons do not seem to behave as I expect when dealing with scales where Octave is defined as something other than "double the frequency".

Specifically I am exploring Just Intonation "tritaves" (i.e where octave is defined as "triple the frequency".)

Here is the contents of one of the .scl files I have created for this purpose.

4/3
3/2
5/3
2/1
7/3
5/2
8/3
3/1

With a span of one octave I get

{1/1, 4/3, 3/2, 5/3, 2/1, 7/3, 5/2, 8/3, 3/1},

and with a span of two octaves I get, as I would expect,

{1/1, 4/3, 3/2, 5/3, 2/1, 7/3, 5/2, 8/3, 3/1, 4/1, 9/2, 5/1, 6/1, 7/1, 15/2, 8/1, 9/1}

BUT, if I have a span of one octave and then I go up an octave using the Oct+ button I get

{2/1, 8/3, 3/1, 10/3, 4/1, 14/3, 5/1, 16/3, 6/1}

rather than the expected

{3/1, 4/1, 9/2, 5/1, 6/1, 7/1, 15/2, 8/1, 9/1}

My conclusion is that the sidebar Oct buttons double/halve the frequency rather than letting the behaviour be determined by the last line of the .scl file.

1. Am I correct? (My brain is slightly frazzled by this, so I may have got it wrong.)

2. If I am correct, would it be possible to modify this in the next update? (Perhaps as a preference - "respect pseudooctaves".)

I note that the pitch sidebar appears to behave as I would expect.

You're right, the Oct +/- go up and down by 12 TET octaves instead of following the scale. Thanks for finding this...

OK.

Is there any possibility of fixing it at short notice?

I'm organising a thumbjam circle at an experimental/electronic music retreat that starts on May the 4th, and the Oct + - buttons are much easier to use than the pitchbar while playing.

Yes, its possible for me to fix this fairly quickly and provide a public beta version you (and others you identify) can install.

That would be wonderful. Thank you so much. :-)
